This festival, running from 28 June to 3 July at La Cité Francophone and at The Carrot Arts Coffeehouse, is co-produced with Theatre Prospero and celebrates Irish-written, -influenced, and -themed theatre. As well as classic Irish dramaturgical delights, the Serca Festival features some of our brightest local (yes, local) playwrights and actors – including a reading of long-time Edmonton favourite Maggie Now, Jennifer Spencer’s adaptation of the classic Betty Smith novel.

About the shows:
Macbeth
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, a tale of epic proportion, Macbeth delves into black magic, supernatural dealings and all the characteristics of the perfect tragic hero: over-reaching ambition that defies the natural order and ends in tragedy. A Theatre Prospero Production, it is directed by Elizabeth Hobbs, featuring Mark Henderson, April Ashley Killins, Richard Beaune, Jon Paterson, Elizabeth Hobbs and Brennan Campbell.

The Tempest
William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, a mythic particle-collider whose reaction breaks the curse of two primal, painful antique stories. In a co-production between The National Stilt Walkers of Canada and Theatre Prospero, this loaded production of masks and puppets breathes new life into a classic tale.

the myth of the white girls
Choreographed by Julie Funk and performed alongside Kathleen Ochoa, this dance tells the story of nature and life as energy that expands and contracts, and remembers itself.

Staged readings of Snout – Free event!
Staged readings of Catch the Keys’ Snout, inspired by a series of dreams, wolf folklore and a variation of the Egyptian myth of Osiris and Isis in which Set dismembers Osiris in a rage of jealousy over Osiris’ place as king. Snout is a mash-up of dream, myth and theory.

Knight of the Fire Beast – Free event!
A 15 minute stilt-dance performance/ritual set to an original music score. It is a combination of action and narration, performed outdoors at the end of sunset.

Beowulf, epic play shop – Free event!
Written by Blake Turner, this story telling will use fight scenes, some narration, and different-sized dragon puppets, important props, and projections and animations. The audience will also help influence the production elements of a major mythic production.

Mythol-orgy movie night! – Free event!
A fundraiser to help support our weeklong event. We’ll be serving snack and drinks and watching our favorite mythological movies suggested by the audience all week long.

And a related event: Samsaria – by donation
Shommee Chakrabartty’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet set in a mythical Eastern Kingdom. The traditional story is told by the ghost of Amrit, an Eastern Prince, who speaks directly to the audience, wanting them to remember his story. The play uses Shakespeare’s language and ideas, but is fused with the thoughts and beliefs of Eastern wisdom and philosophy. It is a ghost story within a ghost story; a play within a play within a play. It is a haunted tale wanting to be retold, wanting to be remembered, wanting to be freed.

We have one update to make that will not be in accordance with literature we might already have sent you: there will no longer be a performance of The Tempest on Friday 29 April. However, all other scheduled shows remain as they were: To Be Performed!

You have indeed arrived at the correct page; our redesign is finally up for all to see (though still being tweaked)!

The latest: As per the previous post (look down the page!), we are currently accepting bookings for a most smashing and splendid season: Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet for 2011-2012. This might be your last chance to have us come to your school under the auspices of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Artists in Education grant! There have been rumblings afoot that this source of funding might be discontinued after next year, so book us now!

We’ll also be showing, in town this April & May, The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream! This will be part of this spring’s new Thousand Faces Festival of Mythic Theatre and Performance, which will feature the above-mentioned plays plus Macbeth and other excellent performances from the world’s classical and mythic traditions. If your school wishes to book and pre-pay for 200 or more seats, you may do so!

We are also involved in multi-day residencies of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Coming of the Kings at two Alberta schools.

Meanwhile, we have been busy on other fronts.  One thing we’ve recently done is to strategise about the AFA Artists & Education grant – which has been given a reprieve and will apparently remain in place for the 2011-12 fiscal year.  We hope you’ll look to your emails for more information about this.

Also, it brings us great pleasure to announce that we are now booking for our spring matinée and evening performances of Macbeth and The Tempest at a local venue (TBD).  Here is the pertinent information:
